I am pleased to announce the 2006 Summer School on Mathematical
Modeling of Infectious Diseases to be held at York University, June
10-20, 2006.

This School is sponsored by The Fields Institute for Research in
Mathematical Sciences, Mathematics for Information Technology and
Complex Systsems, Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, and
York University.

The purpose of this summer school is to provide effective training for
collaborative research in infectious diseases based on mathematical
modeling and qualitative analysis. The school is designed for
epidemiology and public health graduate students, medical residents and
graduate students in interdisciplinary science programs, in addition to

The summer school brings together graduate students, postdoctoral
fellows and young faculty members from business schools, economics,
mathematics and operations research with leading economists and

Mathematical modelling is increasingly being applied to interpret and predict
the dynamics and control of infectious diseases. Applications include
predicting the impact of vaccination strategies against infections and
determining optimal control strategies against influenza, HIV and
vector-borne diseases.

This two week intensive course is intended to introduce professionals working
on infectious diseases to this exciting and expanding area. The emphasis will
be on developing a conceptual understanding of the basic methods and on their
practical application, rather than the manipulation of mathematical

Who should attend:

The course is designed for individuals interested in expanding their
knowledge of the techniques for analysing and interpreting epidemiological
data on infectious diseases and for predicting the impact of control
programmes, including medical and health professionals, policy makers,
veterinary scientists, medical statisticians and infectious disease

Specialist mathematical training is not a prerequisite. However, individuals
with degrees in mathematical disciplines working on some aspect of infectious
disease dynamics and/or control, who wish to learn about the potential of

Calculemus'06 Symposium
July 7-8, 2006, Genova, Italy
13th Symposium on the
Integration of Symbolic Computation and Mechanized Reasoning 2006


(Co-located with ISSAC 2006)


The scientific and technological goal of the Calculemus network is
to design a new generation of mathematical software systems and
computer-aided verification tools based on the integration of
Deduction and Computer Algebra Systems.

Both Deduction Systems (DSs) and Computer Algebra Systems (CASs) are
receiving growing attention from industry and academia. On the one
hand, CASs have been commercially very successful in recent
years. On the other hand, the use of formal methods in hardware and
software development has made DSs indispensable not least because of
the complexity and sheer size of the reasoning tasks involved. Such
systems are now making the transition from academic applications
into regular industrial practice.

In spite of these successes there is still need for improvement as
many application domains still fall outside the scope of existing
DSs and CASs. For instance, the scope of CASs could be significantly
enhanced by adding deductive reasoning power. In fact this lack of
expressivity together with the unsolved problem of correctness
prohibit large classes of applications. DSs, which - on the other
hand - provide such an expressivity, as well as the guarantee of
correctness, still lack computational power as they are not suited
to directly carry out algebraic or numerical calculations. This
severely restricts their scope of application in mathematics and -
more importantly - in engineering applications.

The main goal of the Calculemus symposiums serie is to stimulate
significant research advancements in combining the reasoning
capabilities of DSs and the computational power of CASs as well as
to foster possible cross-fertilizations.

The field of DSs has diversified into the areas of automated theorem
proving and interactive proof-development, which have their own
traditions, conferences and technical methods. The field of CAs has
specialised on devising highly efficient methods for symbolic
calculations. The mission of the Calculemus symposiums serie is to
bringing together such research communities so to create new
generation of expressive, automatic, and easy-to-use systems capable
of performing a wide range of mathematical tasks.

Goals & Topics
Calculemus 2006, the 13th symposium in the series, will be held July
7-8, 2006 at the Universit degli Studi di Genova, Italy, in conjunction
with the International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic
Computation (ISSAC) 2006.

The main theme of Calculemus 2006 will be the interactions between
automated deduction and computer algebra with particular emphasis on
the applications to verification, mathematical assistants, and web

Calculemus 2006 welcomes research papers on all aspects of
integrating symbolic computation and formal deduction including:

* Combining computer algebra and computer deduction systems
* Adding deductive capabilities to computer algebra systems
* Adding computational capabilities to computer deduction systems
* Combining methods of symbolic computation and formal deduction
* Design and implementation issues in integrated systems
* Design and implementation of computer algebra and deduction

The intended audience of the symposium is mainly researchers and
practicioners in the fields of computer algebra and automated

mathematical software systems and computer-aided verification tools
based on the integration of the deduction and computation.

CAF: Computer Algebra and Functional Equations

An international conference in memory of Manuel Bronstein

This international conference offers homage to the scientific career
of one of INRIA's eminent researchers, Manual Bronstein, who passed
away tragically last June.

Manuel Bronstein led INRIA's CAF project in the area of computer algebra.
The scientific work of Manuel Bronstein embraced a panorama of subjects
in this field, where he made a series of valuable contributions.
In addition, he served as an important animator and steward of the
discipline, as an editor and organizer, influencing the careers of
hundreds of researchers in France and internationally.

This conference will highlight aspects of computer algebra from the
perspective of M. Bronstein's work. The conference will take place July 13,
directly following the nearby ISSAC conference held 9-12 July 2006 in Genoa.

The program will include a number of invited presentations
oriented toward the main lines of Manuel Bronstein's scientific
contributions and leadership:

Functional and linear equations
Mathematical software
The computer algebra community

These areas are in an evolutionary phase: the conference aims
to speculate on their future directions.

NEUROMATH 06 - Mathematical Neuroscience Conference

Satellite meeting of COMPSTAT 2006

The workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners
in the fields of Statistical and Scientific Computing. It

Scientific objectives and scope:

Stability plays an essential role in many branches of science and
engineering, including several aspects of fluid mechanics, high-speed
transmission of information, and feasibility of MHD fusion devices. The
objective of the workshop is to give an overview of current
state-of-the-art methods for examining stability, as well as to present
some widely applicable new techniques. The format will consist of four
invited speakers giving a series of lectures at a level aimed at graduate
students but useful for researchers from a variety of disciplines, such as
mathematics, engineering, biology, etc.

Workshop description:

Although the topic of stability of solutions of partial differential
equations is important in almost any application area, the most powerful
techniques one uses to examine stability are hardly ever taught in
courses. This is mainly because many of these techniques have come about
fairly recently. We are organizing a workshop where these techniques are
taught in 4 mini-courses. The workshop is aimed at graduate students,
postdoctoral fellows and young researchers interested in stability
methods, working in different disciplines on a variety of applications.

Course 1. An introduction to stability analysis of nonlinear waves.

Artificial Intelligence and Symbolic Computation are two views and
approaches for automating problem solving. The two approaches are
based on heuristics and on mathematical algorithmics, respectively.
Artificial Intelligence can be applied to Symbolic Computation and
Symbolic Computation can be applied to Artificial Intelligence. A
wealth of challenges, ideas, theoretical insights and results, methods
and algorithms will arise in the interaction of the two fields and
research communities. Advanced tools of software technology and system
design are needed and a broad spectrum of applications is possible by
the combined problem solving power of the two fields. Therefore, the
conference is in the center of interest and interaction for various
research communities:

artificial intelligence, symbolic computation, computer algebra,
automated theorem proving, automated reasoning, formal mathematics,
mathematical knowledge management, algorithmic invention and
learning, logic, software technology, semantic web technology,
computer-based mathematics teaching and didactics, computer-
supported publishing, language and system design, implementation
and performance issues, and additional topics relating to the
interaction of the above.

We encourage researchers working at points of contact in these fields
to share their views, work, and results by submitting papers and taking
part in the conference.
