We invite you to participate in CAIMS*SCMAI 2007, the annual meeting of
the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society/Societe Canadienne
de Mathematiques Appliquees et Industrielles to be held in one of the

An opening for a Post-Doctoral Fellow is anticipated in the Department
of Mathematics & Statistics at McMaster University. The focus of this
industry-funded position will be continued research on integration of
Optimization Theory and Computational Fluid Dynamics with the goal to
develop computational strategies for optimization of multi-physics
fluid systems. In addition to substantial experience in scientific
computing, an ideal candidate would also have background in
Computational / Theoretical Fluid Dynamics and Optimization / Control

The fellowship is open to candidates of any nationality and selection
will be based upon the candidate's research potential. Pending
approval of funding, the tentative start date of the position is
September 1, 2007 and the anticipated duration of the position will
two years with an annual salary of $40,000CAD. Candidates are required

Undergraduate Workshop on Control and Stability

April 30 - May 11, 2007

The first Canadian Undergraduate Workshop on Control and
Stability will be held April 30 - May 11, 2007 at the University
of Waterloo. This workshop is organized by the Dynamical Systems
and Control Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics.


The mathematical theory of control and stability is an active area of
applied mathematics with wide applications in science and engineering.
In modelling scientific or economic phenomena the stability of the
system is often the first issue to be addressed. In cases where the
behaviour is deemed inappropriate, tools from control theory are used to
engineer interventions to arrive at the required performance. The
workshop will expose students to the mathematical theory needed to design
such interventions, as well as how to use this theory to address problems
from a wide array of applications. In addition, the workshop will provide
an opportunity for the participating students to be involved in
collaborative research, as part of the workshop will involve teams of
students taking on mini-research projects.


The workshop is primarily directed toward students who have finished their
3rd year of undergraduate studies and have an overall average of at least
80%. Exceptional second year students may also be considered. Students
from all Canadian universities are invited to apply for admission to the
workshop. Accepted participants will be provided with full financial
support covering both travel and living expenses.

The workshop will run for two weeks. The first week will comprise an
introduction to the field in classroom format, with several hours of
lectures each day coupled to exercises to be carried out on the day's
material. The exercises will include a lab component in which the students
will explore aspects of the theory through a cart-mass-spring system
and a coupled water tank system.


i) Review of ODE's, Laplace transforms, stability results for
linear systems

ii) State-space control theory (controllability, observability,
static and dynamic stabilizability)

iii) Frequency domain control theory (transfer functions, Frequency
response, graphical techniques)

iv) Stability of nonlinear systems, Lyapunov techniques

v) Controller design (PID, LQR, optimal control)

The second week of the workshop will be project based. The group will
split up into teams of approximately five students and each team will be
assigned a mini research project in an application area. The teams
will spend the week researching their problem, with the guidance of one
of the school instructors, and apply the tools they acquired in the
previous week to its solution.

Course dates: 4-15th June 2007


Mathematical modelling is increasingly being applied to interpret and
predict the dynamics and control of infectious diseases. Applications
include predicting the impact of vaccination strategies against infections
and determining optimal control strategies against influenza, HIV, vector-
borne diseases and veterinary problems.

This two week intensive course is intended to introduce professionals
working on infectious diseases in human or animal populations to this
exciting and expanding area. The emphasis will be on developing a
conceptual understanding of the basic methods and on their practical
application, rather than the manipulation of mathematical equations.

Who should attend:

The course is designed for individuals interested in expanding their
knowledge of the techniques for analysing and interpreting epidemiological
data on infectious diseases and for predicting the impact of control
programmes, including medical and health professionals, policy makers,
veterinary scientists, medical statisticians and infectious disease

Specialist mathematical training is not a prerequisite. However,
individuals with degrees in mathematical disciplines working on some
aspect of infectious disease dynamics and/or control, who wish to learn
about the potential of infectious disease modelling will also benefit.

Symposium on Kinetic Equations and Methods
University of Victoria
April 27-28, 2007

A conference in honour of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the
Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences.

World leaders from diverse branches of kinetic theory will gather for an
intense two-day workshop at the University of Victoria in April, 2007.
Ten invited speakers will deliver hour-long lectures on recent work in
kinetic equations. The organizers expect that this format will attract
many participants in addition to the speakers. The structure of the
meeting represents a unique opportunity to hear up-to-date reports from
leaders in many branches of the field at one meeting. Students especially
would benefit from this opportunity.

Visitors may wish to stay in Victoria for the weekend or a longer period,
combine their conference experience with a spring tour of southern
Vancouver Island, or visit other venues in the neighborhood.

Second announcement - Adaptive Dynamics Workshop in Ottawa, May 2007

The Mathematics of Evolution: Adaptive Dynamics in Theory and Practice. A
Fields Institute Workshop at the University of Ottawa, 7th-9th May 2007.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the leading mathematicians
and evolutionary biologists in the field to report on recent progress from
both sides, to provide a forum for interdisciplinary discussion, and to
identify future research directions. The workshop also aims to provide
graduate students with the opportunity to discuss their ideas with these

About AIP:

The enormous increase in computing power and the development of powerful
algorithms has made it possible to apply the techniques of Inverse
Problems to real-world problems of growing complexity. Applications
include a number of medical as well as other imaging techniques, location
of oil and mineral deposits in the earth's substructure, creation of
astrophysical images from telescope data, finding cracks and interfaces
within materials, shape optimization, model identification in growth
processes and, more recently, modelling in the life sciences.

The series of AIP Conferences aim to provide a primary international forum
for academic and industrial researchers working on all aspects of inverse
problems, such as mathematical modelling, functional analytic methods,
