Second Montreal Industrial Problem Solving Workshop (August 18-22, 2008)

We are pleased to announce that the Second Montreal Industrial Problem
Solving Workshop (August 18-22, 2008)
will be held at the Centre de recherches mathematiques in Montreal.
This workshop is sponsored by MITACS and organized
by the CRM, ncm2 (Network for Computing and Mathematical Modelling),
GERAD and CIRRELT.
This year, most of the problems to be studied will fall within the
scope of operations research. For further information, please consult

Second Annual Meeting of Prairie Network for Research in Mathematical
Sciences.
The Prairie Network for Research in Mathematical Sciences (PNRMS) was
formally launched in November 2007,
at the inaugural Annual Meeting held at the University of Regina, May
3-5, 2007. The objective of the Network is to help
encourage and advance research in the mathematical sciences in the
provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan (further details about the
PNRMS can be found at the
website: home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~gumelab/PNRMS/index.html).
The Second Annual Meeting of the PNRMS is scheduled to take place at
Brandon University on May 7-9, 2008. This year’s meeting will follow
a Student Workshop
(organized by Professors J. Chipalkatti and A. Stokke of the
Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg, respectively) inAlgebra and
Combinatorics. The Workshop is
broadly aimed at the senior undergraduate or beginning graduate level.
In addition to presentations on research activity, the Annual Meeting
and the Student Workshop
will provide an opportunity for students and faculty at prairie
universities to meet face-to-face and discuss issues and initiatives
related to the Network. The Meeting is organized
by Murray Bremner (Saskatchewan), Douglas Farenick (Regina), Chenkuan
Li (Brandon; Chair), Anna Stokke (Winnipeg) and Nina Zorboska
(Manitoba). The website of

7th AIMS International Conference on Dynamical Systems,
Differential Equations and Applications (May 18-21, 2008)
The 7th AIMS International Conference on Dynamical Systems,
Differential Equations and Applications will be hosted by the
Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas at Arlington
(http://www.uta.edu/math/aims2008/). The conference will be held on
May 18 – 21, 2008 on the campus of UT Arlington. The city of
Arlington is located at the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex,
about 20 miles from Dallas,
10 miles from Fort Worth.

Fifth Prairie Discrete Mathematics Workshop
The University of Manitoba will be hosting the Fifth Prairie Discrete
Mathematics Workshop on May 28 and 29, 2008
(see http://server.maths.umanitoba.ca/~craigen/PDMW08/PDMW.html).
This workshop follows the format of the previous Prairie Discrete
Mathematics Workshops. The idea is that there will
be a series of one-hour talks by 10-12 invited speakers.
There will also be a open poster session. See the web site for
instructions. This is an excellent opportunity for graduate students
and post-docs.

Workshop on Population Dynamics and Mathematical Biology (CIRM Luminy,
France, June 16-20, 2008)
The goal of this workshop is to bring together specialists from
different fields to discuss recent progress in Population Dynamics and
Mathematical Biology focusing on the qualitative analysis of
structured population models, with regards to pattern formation, front
propagation, and bifurcation phenomena. Special attention will be
given to applications in the spread and control of epidemic diseases,
invasion and persistence in ecological systems as well as in
biomedical and cancer modeling.
Participation is by invitation in general. However, any researcher
(especially graduate students and recent Ph.D.’s) active in this field
and interested in attending the workshop is encouraged to contact one

TThe 10-th Annual Conference for Canadian Queueing Theorists and
Practitioners (Canqueue 2008)
Following the success of 9 previous conferences held in Winnipeg
(1999), London (2000), Waterloo (2001), Saskatoon (2002), Toronto
(2003), Kelowna (2004),
Hamilton (2005), Banff (2006) and Halifax (2007), the 10th CanQueue
meeting will be held in Ottawa, August 28-30, 2008. The conference is
organized
by Carleton University under the sponsorship of Fields Institute and
MITACS, and Laboratory for Research in Statistics and Probability at
School of Mathematics
and Statistics of Carleton University (the conference website is
located at: http://www.math.carleton.ca/CanQueue-08/).
The CanQueue conference started from a workshop organized by Dr. A.S.
Alfa at the University of Manitoba in 1999. The name “CanQueue” was
suggested and used at the meeting in London, Ontario, in 2000. The
goal of the conference is to promote research and applications of
queueing theory. The annual conference provides a forum where
scientists, researchers, engineers, executives and students in the
field meet to encourage on-going research and to discuss
work-in-progress. You are invited to participate this meeting!

MITACS Canada-Africa Biomath Network Summer School in
Mathematical Biology, Botswana
The Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS)
has formed a Canada-Africa Biomath Network in 2007. The central
objective of the
Network, which was formally laucnhed in Kampala, Uganda, November
2007, is to foster collaboration (for research and training) between
mathematical and public health scientists from Canada and their
colleagues in Africa in areas pertaining to the use of mathematical
sciences to combat the spread of emerging and re-emerging
diseases of public health importance. MITACS recognizes that the
globalization of the modern world makes every country, including
Canada, vulnerable to diseases emerging and spreading in other parts
of the
world. It is crucially important for Canada to partake and lead in a
concerted effort to develop training and research programs aimed at
finding effective methodologies to combat the spread of emerging or
re-emerging diseases in other regions of the world (particularly
hot-spot areas like Africa) and also help build and sustain a strong
local research capacity to handle such tasks
The Network focuses on the development of new mathematical models,
methodologies and tools for designing effective public health policy
for controlling
the spread of diseases in Africa, with a view of understanding the
epidemiological and health practices that make the continent of Africa
vulnerable to persistent
outbreaks. Training (of highly qualified personnel) is at the heart
of the Network’s activities. MITACS is pleased to announce the First
Canada-Africa
Biomath Summer School, scheduled in Botswana August 18-29, 2008. The
School will consist of series of lectures and tutorials on the
design and analyses of models for the spread of emerging and re-emerging
diseases. Various modeling paradigms will be discussed, in addition to
giving introductory lectures on materials pertinent to the course. The
Summer School will include a number of hands-on and computer exercises,
together with group projects to reinforce and extend the various concepts
covered during lectures. Leading and young experts, from Africa and Canada,
will conduct this course. It is expected that medical and public health
specialists from Canada and Africa will also partake in this exercise
(both as speakers and as participants). Those interested in attending the
