2009 CAIMS*SCMAI Annual Meeting

The 2009 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Applied Mathematical and
Industrial Society will be hosted by the Department of Applied
Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario, in London, Ontario on June
10-14, 2009. The themes of this meeting are

Computational Biomaterials
Complex Fluids
Dynamical Systems
Mathematical Biology
Mathematical Finance
Scientific/Symbolic Computing
Theoretical Physics

There will be seven plenary lectures and numerous invited talks (30
minutes) on the above themes.

In addition to these, we also call for minisymposia on any topics in
applied mathematics. If you are interested in organizing such a
symposium, please submit your proposal
to us by the address given below. There will also be several
contributed sessions, as well as a
poster session for graduate students to present their research results.

In the meeting, the annual CAIMS Research Prize and CAIMS Doctoral
Dissertation Award will be presented to the receipients. In addition,
student poster prizes will
also be selected and awarded.

The year 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of CAIMS which makes this
meeting more special and more worth attending. Some activities are
being planned, and this gives one
a unique opportunity to know the history of this society. You are
cordially invited to join us in London to celebrate the society’s
healthy
growth and great achievements in the past 30 years.

Objectives:

To foster scientific exchanges within the scientific computing
community; to train senior undergraduate and graduate
students, post-doctoral fellows, and young researchers in the
form of three minicourses given by world recognized experts in
the general areas of scientific computing in Science, Engineering
and Medicine; to maximize interactions between the students,
the senior participants, and the main speakers by reserving up
to half of the time for student presentations; to encourage the
participation of non-academic (private or public sector) research

Fields–Centre for Mathematical Medicine
Postdoctoral Fellowships

The Centre of Mathematical Medicine (CMM) hosted at the Fields Institute,
Toronto, invites applications for candidates for a number of CMM-Fields
postdoctoral fellowships to commence July 1, 2009 or a negotiable date
thereafter.

We are looking for individuals who would strengthen current
interdisciplinary activity at the Centre. While positions are open to all
areas of mathematical medicine and biology, preference will be given to
those individuals with research interests in the current principal areas of
CMM focus: mathematical oncology, computational neuroscience, and
biomechanics of soft tissues or bioinformatics. In particular, we are
looking for individuals interested in collaborative interaction with
clinicians and experimentalists.

The fellowships provide for a period of engagement in research and
participation in the activities of the Centre. They may be offered in
conjunction with partner universities. List on the cover sheet of the
application if there are any faculty members at universities affiliated with
the Fields Institute who you believe are appropriate.

Post-doctoral Position in Computational Fluid Dynamics and
Optimization, McMaster

An opening for a Post-Doctoral Fellow is anticipated in the Department
of Mathematics & Statistics at McMaster University. The fellow will
work in the research group of Dr. Protas, and the focus of this
industry-funded position will be continued research on integration of
Optimization Theory and Computational Fluid Dynamics with the goal to
develop strategies for optimization of multi-physics fluid systems. In
addition to substantial experience in scientific computing, an ideal
candidate would also have background in Computational / Theoretical
Fluid Dynamics and Optimization / Control Theory. This position will
also involve some teaching responsibilities.

The fellowship is open to candidates of any nationality and selection
will be based upon the candidate’s research potential. Pending
approval of funding, the tentative start date of the position is
September 1, 2009 and the anticipated duration of the position will be
two years with an annual salary of $42,000. Candidates are required to

PhD and MSc Opportunities at University of Ottawa and UOIT

Title: PEM fuel cells: Mathematical modeling, computation and analysis
of micro/nano-scale
transport processes near interfaces of porous domains

Description: We are looking for one PhD graduate student at the
University of Ottawa and one
MSc student at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology
(UOIT) for a multi-disciplinary
project on mathematical modeling, computation and mathematical
analysis of micro/nano-scale
transport processes near domain interfaces in hydrogen fuel cells.
This position is part of a collaboration between University of Ottawa,
UOIT and Toyota Motor
Corporation, coordinated by Prof. Peter Berg (Physics,

Eligibility:
PhD: MSc (or equivalent) in applied mathematics or physics.

Salary:
PhD: A total of $112,000 over 4 years, with an average of $28,000 per year.
MSc: $25,000 per year, for two years.

Master of Science Candidate in Math/Biology

Behavioural and Oceanographic modelling
Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova
Scotia, Canada

Position:

Applications are sought for a Masters’ candidate in the Mathematics &
Statistics Department of Acadia University. The successful candidate
will be co-supervised by faculty member in the Mathematics and
Statistics Department and in the Biology Departments of Acadia
University. The candidate will be expected to participate as a member
of an interdisciplinary team of ecologists, oceanographers and computer
scientists that are creating a web-enabled Platform for Ocean Knowledge
Management (POKM). This research will entail assisting in the
development of statistical models of marine predator movement behaviour
that integrate oceanographic information obtained from general
circulation models. The successful candidate will work closely with
oceanographers and computer scientists from Dalhousie University and the
Bedford Institute of Oceanography

Qualifications:

Applicants must have strong quantitative skills and a strong statistical
background. Experience with biological or physical oceanography, animal
tagging, and with the statistical programming environment R and/or
Matlab is desireable.

Responsibilities:

Collection and organization of quality controlled auxiliary behavioural
data sets; assist in the initial organization of behavioural and
physical/remotely sensed data into database(s) compatible with POKM
architecture; assist in the development of visualizations and models of
the biological and physical data

Salary:

Part time contract work could begin immediately. The applicant will be
expected to apply to the Master of Science program in the Mathematics &
Statistics Department at Acadia University for admission in September
2009. A competitive graduate student stipend will be available from the
project for the 2 years M.Sc. Program plus the possibility of an Acadia
Graduate Award.
