Daniel Coombs (UBC) Awarded CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) and the Pacific Institute for the
Mathematical Sciences (PIMS) are pleased to announce that Prof. Daniel Coombs of the University of
British Columbia has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in
Applied Mathematics. This award recognizes exceptional research in any branch of applied mathematics
where the recipient is less than ten years past the date of Ph.D. at the time of nomination.

Prof. Coombs is cited for his creativity, productivity, and ever-growing impact in mathematics applied
to problems in biology. He works in the field of computational immunology, addressing a wide range of
problems in viral disease dynamics and HIV modelling, and in the dynamics of receptors on cell surfaces.
In particular, he and his coworkers have recently developed innovative single particle tracking
algorithms that have enabled improved and insightful interpretation of experimental data from cell
biology.

Prof. Coombs obtained his PhD in 2001 from the University of Arizona, held a postdoctoral position
at Los Alamos National Laboratories (2001-03), and joined UBC in 2003, where he is currently an
Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics.

The award consists of a cash prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the
CAIMS Annual Meeting at Memorial University at St. John’s on July 17-20, 2010. Prof. Coombs will
deliver a plenary lecture at the meeting as part of the award ceremony.

Brian Wetton (UBC) Awarded 2010 CAIMS/MITACS Industrial Mathematics Prize

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) and MITACS are pleased to announce
that Professor Brian Wetton of the Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia
has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 CAIMS/MITACS Industrial Mathematics Prize. This award
recognizes exceptional research, conducted primarily in Canada, in any branch of industrial
mathematics. The prize is also an acknowledgement of industrial mathematics as a fundamental and
vibrant discipline within the research culture of Canada.

Prof. Wetton’s research activity in industrial mathematics, particularly in the area of fuel cells,
was singled out for this honor for numerous reasons. The efforts by Prof. Wetton and his group have
successfully demonstrated the direct applicability of advanced mathematics in real world problems.
At a critical time, Prof. Wetton responded directly to the real needs of industry and the Canadian
mathematics community. He refocused his research from numerical analysis and scientific computing
to industrial mathematics, specifically the modeling of fuel cells, early in his career, when he was
a young untenured faculty member. It took a lot of courage and conviction to make such risky move.
The modeling work he and his MITACS research team performed was not an academic exercise. Rather,
it was a direct response to the needs of a new industry.

He successfully managed a research team with members from industrial partners and different academic
institutions. He has a distinguished record of mentoring and supervision, and his students have embarked
on successful careers in industrial mathematics. He has been an active member of both the CAIMS and
MITACS communities, and unstinting with his time and energy to help both.

By spearheading a successful collaborative effort between a team of academic researchers and their
industrial partner Prof. Wetton has served as a role model to Canadian mathematicians. By awarding
him the prize, the committee believes more young and talented applied mathematicians will be encouraged
to work in the area of industrial mathematics.

The award consists of a cash prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the

ICIAM 2011: Call for Papers

7th International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, July 18-22, 2011, Vancouver,
British Columbia, Canada

ICIAM 2011 will highlight the most recent advances in the discipline and demonstrate their applicability
to science, engineering, and industry. In addition to the traditional, strong focus on applied mathematics,
the Congress will emphasize industrial applications and computational science. An integrated program will
highlight the many outstanding contributions of applied mathematics. ICIAM 2011 will also be an opportunity
to demonstrate to young researchers and graduate students the vast potential of mathematics.
The Congress is being planned by the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS), the
Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS), and the Society for Industrial and
Applied Mathematics (SIAM).

CAIMS*SCMAI 2010 Annual Meeting
The 2010 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Applied Mathematical and Industrial Society will be hosted
by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Memorial University, in St. John’s, Newfoundland,
Canada on July 17-20, 2010.
The themes of the meeting are:

We are pleased to announce that we now have an online facility to allow CAIMS membership renewals and
new membership applications to be done online through a secure server. We invite you to renew your
membership for 2010 through this facility and to encourage potential new members to use it to sign
up for membership.

The first time you sign in, even if you are already a member of CAIMS, you will have to create a

Three North American mathematical institutes: CIMAT, IMA and PIMS are jointly organizing the
following industrial training event which is open to students from all over Canada:

Mathematical Modeling in Industry: A Workshop for Graduate Students to be held at CIMAT in
Guanajuato, MEXICO, August 2-11, 2010.

Postdoctoral Position: Mathematical Systems Biology at Waterloo

Application are invited for a postdoctoral position to work with Brian Ingalls of the Department
of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, starting Fall 2010.
Potential projects involve modelling and analysis of biochemical and genetic networks, with a
particular interest in understanding the role of feedback and regulation.

PhD Positions in Computational Mechanics and Advanced Materials, University of Pavia, Italy (managed
by Prof. Franco Brezzi, IUSS, and Prof. Ferdinando Auricchio, University of Pavia)

We are looking for PhD students interested in participating in a biomechanical research project.

Position 1: PhD in Computational Biomechanics. The successful candidate would be expected to have
skills, or be willing to develop, in some of the following areas:

– mathematical modeling in the biomechanical context;
– numerical simulation of the structural and fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction;
– fluid-structure interaction analysis with in-house and/or commercial numerical codes;
– processing medical images and integrating them into mathematical models;
– interacting with cardiosurgery experts and providing the interface between the medical specialists
and the members of the team responsible for the engineering and mathematical aspects.

Position 2: PhD in Constitutive Modeling

The successful candidate would be expected to have skills, or be willing to develop, in some of the
following areas:

– computational mechanics;
– constitutive models of materials, including shape memory alloys (SMA) and innovative materials;
– development of in-house numerical codes (knowledge of at least two of MATLAB, FORTRAN, C++).

Position 3: PhD in Advanced Computational Mechanics

The successful candidate would be expected to have skills, or be willing to develop, in some of the
following areas:
– FEM and XFEM;
– immersed boundary methods;
– isogeometric analysis,
all to be used to simulate the dynamics of biomechanical systems and fluid-structure interaction.

For all positions, the successful candidates are expected to have a high level of motivation, sound
academic accomplishments and ability to learn and work independently. It is also expected that the
successful candidates will have an active role in disseminating the outcomes of the project including
presenting at conferences and publishing scientific papers.

The program is three years in duration. Two positions are offered jointly by the Institute for the
Advanced Study (IUSS) and the University of Pavia, both located in Pavia, Italy and covered by
scholarships, according to Italian PhD rules, but up to two self-funded candidates will also be
considered.

The deadline for the submission of the application is June 30, 2010. The website of the PhD Program

Interdisciplinary Graduate Program at McMaster The School of Computational Engineering and Science
(CES) is an interdisciplinary graduate program at McMaster University offering Ph.D. and Master’s
degrees (Master’s degrees can be pursued with the thesis, project or coursework only option). Our
program is open to well-qualified students with an interest in various aspects of applied
computational science and scientific computing. All details regarding this program, including
