Several awards will be presented at the CAIMS*SCMAI 2002 Annual Meeting (see
item 2, below). The Society acknowledges with gratitude the following
sponsors of the awards.

Memorial University of Newfoundland is sponsoring this year’s CAIMS
Doctoral Dissertation Award. The University will give a $1,000 cash prize
to the award winner. The sponsorship was arranged by Serpil Kocabiyik, CAIMS
Fundraising Committee Chair.

Waterloo Maple Inc. will sponsor the graduate students poster session at
the CAIMS 2002, Calgary. The winner of the best poster presentation will
win a full version of the MAPLE software, which is worth US$900. Waterloo
Maple’s sponsorship will continue for the future CAIMS annual meetings. The
Calgary CAIMS 2002 organizer, Paul Binding, and our last year’s annual
meeting organizer, Rod Edwards, attracted this sponsorship.

It is a pleasure to announce that “Mathematical Methods with Applications”
by Professor Matiur Rahman has recently be selected for inclusion in Choice
magazine’s annual Outstanding Academic Title list. Professor Rahman is a
faculty member in the Department of Engineering Mathematics at Dalhousie
University and a longtime member of CAIMS*SCMAI.

This year’s Outstanding Academic Title list includes slightly over 600 books
and electronic resources chosen by Choice editorial staff from among
approximately 6 600 titles reviewed by Choice during the year 2001. These
titles were selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the
significance of their contribution to the field, and for their value as
important – often the first – treatment of a specific subject. Comprising less
than 10 percent of the titles reviewed by Choice during the past year, and less
than 3 percent of the 23 000+ titles submitted to Choice during this same
period, Outstanding Academic Titles are truly the “best of the best.”

Included below is a letter from Ian Sloan, Chair of the International Program
Committee for ICIAM 2003, explaining the procedures involved in organising
a minisymposium. Minisymposia organised by member societies, such as CAIMS*SCMAI,
are particularly encouraged; do consider participating in this fashion. If
you decide to organise a minisymposium, please contact a member of the
CAIMS*SCMAI board so that we can let the ICIAM organisers know yours is
a CAIMS*SCMAI minisymposium.


Dear Colleague,

As you know, ICIAM 2003 (the fifth International Congress on Industrial
and Applied Mathematics) will be held in Sydney from July 7 to 11 next
year. We are expecting some 2,000 participants, making this the largest
international applied mathematics event in the four-year cycle. The site
is excellent, the invited speakers outstanding. We think it will be
an outstanding event.

At the heart of the ICIAM congresses, and comparable in importance to the
invited speakers, are the minisymposia.

Briefly, a minisymposium occupies a two hour time slot, and typically
involves four speakers, on a specific theme chosen by you as organiser,
with each speaker taking half an hour (or better, 25 minutes and five
minutes for questions). We think it a good idea if the first talk
(possibly given by you?) gives an overview of the topic, for the benefit
of attendees who are not experts.

A minisymposium is expected to be of an international level of distinction
(which of course is why I am asking you), and would normally not contain
speakers from only one country.

If you have not already seen the web site at, I encourage
you to look at it now. It contains full details of the 27 distinguished
invited speakers, and further information about minisymposia. Note that
there are in effect three alternative deadlines. The regular deadline is
October 31, but I encourage you to meet the earlier date of August 31 if
you can, because after that date we intend to accept some of the
proposals, if they seem to be particularly strong, and likely to encourage
others to come to ICIAM 2003.

Unfortunately, as you will need to make clear to those you invite to take
part, the organisers do not have funds available to support minisymposia.
On the other hand, I think myself that organising a minisymposium does have
its rewards, since it is a sure way of making certain that the program is
of professional interest to you, and that some of your distinguished

Quantum Control: mathematical and numerical challenges

This conference will concentrate on advanced numerical methods and new
mathematical tools for control and optimization in the quantum control
of matter at the molecular level using current advanced laser

This new field of research is dedicated to “using current state of the
art laser technology to control and manipulate the quantum behaviour and
motion of matter at the molecular level”. The basis of this new science
is the encoding and control of quantum information at the molecular
level in order to control the time evolution of molecular processes,
such as guiding the final output of a reaction to a desired target. Most
of the research in this area has been numerical and theoretical,
involving multidimensional time-dependent Schroedinger equations,TDSE’s.
Coupling these molecular processes to the laser field equations,
Maxwell’s equations, results in coupled parabolic (TDES’s) and
hyperbolic (Maxwell) partial differential equations. There are
outstanding problems, both numerical and mathematical, which this
workshop will address by bringing together mathematicians, theoretical
chemists and physicists working in the area of control and optimization
of systems subject to quantum laws.

The conference will involve about 30 international experts in laser
molecule interactions, optimization, theory and control of molecular
dynamics. It will emphasize participation of graduate students in
applied mathematics, theoretical chemistry and physics.

Graduate and postdoctoral students are invited to apply for local
support (hotel room in double occupancy plus a per diem). Up to 20 such
grants will be awarded. The deadline for application on our website

been reserved for short papers presentations by graduate and
postdoctoral students.

Refereed proceedings of the meeting will be published by the CRM.
