CAIMS Graduate Student Travel Scholarship for ICIAM 2007

CAIMS has established a Graduate Student Travel Scholarship of $1000
in support of the travel costs for one graduate student at a Canadian
University who will be presenting a talk or poster at the 6th International
Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Zurich, Switzerland, from
July 16-20, 2007 (http://www.iciam07.ch). Student applicants can apply
by emailing a copy of their ICIAM 2007 abstract by December 4, 2006
(ICIAM deadline is November 12, 2006) to Dr. Matt Davison <mdavison@uwo.ca>.

Submitted abstracts will be evaluated by a panel of judges (whose decision
will be final) appointed by the President of the Society. Judging will be
on the basis of the level of originality in the ideas and techniques,
possible applications and their treatment, and the potential impact on
science and engineering.

Applications are invited for a tenure-track faculty position in the Department
of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, in the field of
Mathematical Physics, to begin on or after July 1, 2007. The position is at

MSRI workshop, Connections for Women: Dynamical Systems

Dear Colleagues,

As the organizers of the MSRI “Connections for Women: Dynamical
Systems” workshop, January 18-19, 2007, we’re contacting you to ask if
you would be willing to help us get the word out about this event.

The workshop is part of MSRI’s semester-long program on dynamical
systems that’s happening from January to May 2007.

This intensive two-day workshop will spotlight several innovative
applications of dynamical systems theory, offering advanced graduate
students and recent PhDs an insider’s tour of recent developments in
the field and setting the stage for the semester-long program
Dynamical Systems. The program includes invited lectures, contributed
talks, a poster session, and a workshop dinner.

Men are actively encouraged to participate.

A key goal of the workshop is the recruitment of participants as
active members and future leaders of the growing network of women in
the mathematical sciences. There will be ample opportunity to make new
contacts and share strategies for identifying and achieving our
scientific and professional goals. We welcome applications from all
interested parties, including advanced graduate students and postdocs.

The current speaker list is Gerda de Vries (U Alberta), Jenny Harrison
(UC Berkeley), Svetlana Jitomirskaya* (UC Irvine), Rachel Kuske (U
British Columbia), Mary Silber (Northwestern), and Mary Lou Zeeman (UT
San Antonio). *=not yet confirmed.

Some participant funding is available (deadline to apply: November
10). Some additional funding will be available for participants to
attend the Introductory Workshop on Dynamical Systems with Emphasis on
Extended Systems the following week, January 22-26, 2007.

12th ACM Solid and Physical Modeling Symposium

Since its inception in 1991, the ACM Symposium on Solid Modeling and
Applications has been the primary venue for disseminating research results in
the design, representation, analysis, visualization, and use of digital models
of real or planned solid objects and their bounding surfaces. Actually, solid
modeling entails not only modeling their geometric shape, but also their
physical properties and behaviors. To emphasize this broader mission, the name
of the Symposium was expanded to Solid and Physical Modeling (SPM) in 2005.
SPM seeks submissions from academic, industrial and government researchers
that present new results regarding the analysis, simulation, modeling, and
animation of the behavior of objects; and the properties of objects as
functions of space and time in response to interactions with human users,
operators or the physical environment.

“The Influence of Fluid Dynamics on the Behaviour and Distribution of
Plankton”

Planktonic organisms have evolved a bewildering variety of adaptations and
exhibit a wealth of strategies for survival in the freshwater and marine
environments. In this colloquium we focus on how plankton are impacted by the
fluid dynamical regime governing their surroundings. Specifically we
encourage presentations that investigate how fluid dynamics affects the
behaviour (swimming, feeding and hydrodynamic signalling on small scales),
population growth (resource competition on intermediate scales) and spatial
distribution (aggregations and patchiness over a range of scales) of the
Plankton (in its broadest sense from bacteria to fish larvae). Synergistic
interactions between modellers and experimentalists are anticipated.
