CAIMS*SCMAI 2010 Election: Call for Nominations (by Jianhong Wu)

CAIMS*SCMAI will be holding an election next winter (March 2010) for:

* Treasurer

* Two Members-at-Large on the Board of Directors

to fill the positions to be vacated, respectively, by Paul Muir,
Dhavide Aruliah and Ian
Frigaard.

All members of CAIMS/SCMAI are invited to suggest names of candidates for
these offices. Nominations should reach the Chair of the Nominations
Committee,

CAIMS*SCMAI 2010 Annual Meeting

The 2010 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Applied Mathematical and
Industrial Society will be hosted by the Department of Mathematics and
Statistics at Memorial University, in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
on July 17-20, 2010.
The themes of the meeting are:

Dynamical Systems
Fluid Dynamics (CSFD-2010)
Mathematical Biology and Medicine
Mathematical and Theoretical Physics
Nonlinear Dynamics and Control
Ocean Modeling and Technology
Scientific Computing
Statistical and Population Genetics

There will be eight plenary lectures and numerous invited talks (20
minutes) on the above themes, and two special invited lectures.

information and titles of the talks to one of the co-chairwomen of
the CAIMS*SCMAI 2010 Scientific Program by the address given below.

There will also be several contributed sessions, as well as a poster
session for graduate students to present their research results.

In the meeting, the annual CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prizes and CAIMS Doctoral
Dissertation Award will be presented to the recipients. In addition,
student poster prizes will also be selected and awarded.

Position for Deputy Director, Fields Institute

This is a call for applications or nominations for the position of Deputy
Director of the Fields Institute for a term of three to five years beginning
July 1, 2010. The deputy director works closely with the director on all
aspects of the Institute’s oversight and program development.

Qualified candidates should be mathematical scientists with good management
skills, an excellent research record, and a strong interest in developing
the programs of the Institute. Women and members of under-represented groups
are encouraged to apply.

In the past, this position has been filled by a mathematical scientist
seconded from a local university, but we are also open to other strategies,
such as using this as an opportunity to recruit new faculty to Ontario.

Tenure Track Position at McGill University

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McGill University
invites applications for a tenure-track position in applied
mathematics. While appointments are expected to be made at the
Assistant Professor level, more senior applicants would be considered.

The appointment is expected to be in numerical analysis within the
broad area of differential equations and scientific computing.
Applicants should have expertise in both analytical and computational
aspects, and an active interest in problems driven by applications.

Candidates must have a doctoral degree at the date of appointment and a strong background in mathematics. They are expected to have demonstrated the capacity for independent research of excellent quality. Selection criteria include research accomplishments, as well as potential contributions to the Department’s educational programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Applications should be made through MathJobs.Org (Position ID:
McGill-APNUM) and must include a curriculum vitae, a list of
publications, a research outline, a teaching statement which includes
an account of teaching experience, and at least four references (with
one addressing the teaching record). Candidates are also encouraged to
provide web links for up to three selected reprints or preprints, or
to upload them to MathJobs.Org.

Candidates must ensure that letters of reference are submitted
(preferably through mathjobs.org, though in exceptional circumstances
they may be mailed to Professor A.R. Humphries, Applied Mathematics

Computational Optimization, Modelling and Simulation (COMS 2010)

Amsterdam, May 31-June 2, 2010

The workshop “Computational Optimization, Modelling and Simulation
(COMS 2010)” will be a part of the International Conference on
Computational Science (ICCS 2010). It intends to provide a forum and
foster discussion on the cross-disciplinary research and development
in computational optimization, computer modeling and simulations. It
will focus on new optimization algorithms, new trends, and latest
developments in numerical techniques as well as application studies of
optimization in science, engineering and industry.

Topics include (but not limited to):
– Computational optimization;
– Engineering optimization and design;
– Optimization of computationally expensive objective functions;
– Surrogate- and knowledge-based optimization algorithms;
– Integrated approach to optimization and simulation;
– Multiobjective optimization;
