BIRS Workshop on Mathematical Epidemiology

A workshop on Mathematical Epidemiology was held on August 20-25, 2005 at the
Banff International Research Station. Population growth and spread, global
climate change, and the emergence and reemergence of novel and deadly forms of
infectious diseases have increased the need for sound quantitative methods to
guide disease intervention practice. This BIRS workshop focused on specific
diseases, epidemiological problems, public health policies, comparisons of
disease intervention strategies, recent advances, open questions, new
approaches, and future directions for research. Participant interaction was
promoted by long discussion periods following the thirteen lectures on
influenza drift and evolution, modeling multi-strain diseases, network and
compartmental modeling of disease transmission and vaccination, wildlife
diseases, and emerging/reemerging diseases such as HIV, SARS, and West Nile
Virus. There were also many opportunities for informal discussions among the
40 participants consisting of applied mathematicians, statisticians, and
epidemiologists. Both mathematical modelers and public health policy decision
makers will ultimately benefit from this workshop on modeling as a decision
making tool for the epidemiology and control of infectious diseases. For a
summary of this BIRS workshop, see the final report at http://www.pims.math.ca/birs/birspages.php?task=displayevent&event_id=05…
or in the Banff International Research Station Proceedings 2005.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE AND ITS APPLICATIONS (ICCSA
2006)

Workshop ON “MOLECULAR STRUCTURES AND PROCESSES “(MSP2006)

to be held at The Hilton Glasgow, Scotland, UK; May 08, 2006 May 11, 2006

Workshop site: http://www.iccsa.org/

1. WHY MSP2006 at ICCSA2006

The focus of computational chemistry has gradually shifted from the treatment
of simple systems to complex simulations thanks to the evolution of related
theoretical approaches and computational tools. As to theoretical approaches
the evolution of electronic structure calculation techniques, the development
of potential energy and force fields production instruments, the increase of
the capability of integrating dynamics, kinetics and fluid dynamics equations,
the extension of statistical treatments to reproduce observable properties and
thermodynamical quantities has made it feasible to assemble realistic
simulations of complex phenomena. As to computing technology the recent
progress in deploying high throughput computational environments, neworking and
grid facilities, efficient visualization and virtual reality tools as well as
specifically tailored PSE approaches is fostering a service oriented
structuring of molecular simulations.
The MSP2006 workshop will be a high level forum for exchanging information,
ideas tecniques and software on how to progress in this field to support the
advance in scientific research education and industrial applications.

We invite you to submit a:
full paper of 6 to 10 pages (Letter or A4 paper) for oral presentation, short
paper (3 to 6 pages) for oral presentation formatted according to the rules of
LNCS. See http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html for formatting
information. Please, send your contribution by e-mail to piovro@gmail.com.
Submitted papers have to be original, containing new results that were not
previously published. Full version of papers acepted for oral communication
will appear in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). Papers can also be
accepted as posters.

2nd workshop on Modelling of Complex Systems by Cellular Automata (MCSCA 2006)

University of Reading
May 28-30, 2006

Call for Papers

A workshop named Modelling of Complex Systems by Cellular Automata 2006 (MCSCA
2006) is organized within the scope of the International Conference on
Computational Science (ICCS 2006), University of Reading, UK, May 28-31, 2006

http://www.c-mail.cz/kroc/workshops/workshop-MCSCA-2006.html

The main goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers working with
complex systems within diverse scientific fields as biology, physics,
mathematics, engineering, economics, and many others. The main focus of the
modelling complex systems will be on the Cellular Automata computational
approach. Complex systems are proven to be a powerful theoretical framework
that helps us to capture the essence of many real systems where other
approaches and methods failed. Cellular Automata enable us to define and to
work with complex systems effectively and easily. This workshop is open to
other fields related to complex systems and/or Cellular Automata as well.

The main issue of this workshop lies in the heart of the ICCS conference goal,
i.e. it is designed to hit the community, which pioneers computational methods
in a wide range of scientific fields. Our personal experience is that such
contacts of researches from completely diverse fields could lead to a mutual
cross-fertilization of complex systems involving many disciplines and could
stimulate ongoing researches.

Systems exhibiting complex behaviour have been identified in the following
fields:

. Biomedicine and Biology
. Sociology and Psychology
. Physics
. Mathematics
. Computer Science
. Economics and Econophysics
. Urban planning, etc.

and many other fields not mentioned here but which could be applied to submit.

Submission Guidelines
Email the paper — having maximum of 8 pages — as an attachment (in PS or PDF
format) to one of the workshop’s Program Chair Dr. Jiri Kroc (kroc@c-mail.cz),
Prof. Dr. Stefania Bandini (bandini@disco.unimib.it), or Dr. Tomoaki Suzudo (tsuzudo@abox2.so-net.ne.jp) or upload it to the conference or the workshop
web-page. Authors could submit papers directly to the workshop using ICCS’s
paper submission engine. When registering to submit a paper at
http://www.iccs-meeting.org/iccs2006/papers/ authors are offered a choice of
main track, or any of the accepted workshops to submit their paper to. All
papers will be reviewed and the accepted papers will be published in
Springer’s Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). The submitted paper must
be camera-ready and formatted according to the rules of LNCS (for formatting
information see Information for LNCS Authors). Please keep strictly author
instructions provided at the conference web page. Submission implies the
willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper.
A selection of the best papers for the conference will be published in a
special issue of an international journal.

Important Dates

. Full papers submission: December 2, 2005
. Notification of acceptance of papers: January 31, 2006
. Camera-ready papers: February 10, 2006
. Early registration: March 30, 2006

The official deadline for the full paper submission for this workshop could be
extended under certain conditions. Please, check this web page regularly.
