2013 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics
CAIMS and PIMS are pleased to announce that Prof. Serdar Yuksel of Queen’s University has been awarded the 2013 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics. Prof. Yuksel received his MSc in 2003 and PhD in 2006, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, under the supervision of Tamer Basar. Subsequently, he did postdoctoral work at Yale University, and currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Prof. Yuksel was cited “for his contributions to the areas of information and control theory, and the interface between these.”
Professor Yuksel’s main contributions are in two areas. In the first instance, he has made fundamental contributions to the study of control of systems under information constraints. He has developed a framework in which the factors that govern the feasibility of control systems with unreliability in data transfer are laid bare, and has designed effective control laws that can be shown to work. His second area of key contributions is in decentralized control, i.e. situations in which one has many agents whose behaviour one is trying to control, but in which agents do not communicate fully with one another, and/or some do not communicate at all. In this instance, Professor Yuksel has provided a framework for evaluating the extent and type of information that must be transmitted in order that the desired group behaviour can be
achieved.

2013 CAIMS Research Prize
CAIMS is pleased to announce that the 2013 CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize has been awarded to Prof. Neil Balmforth, University of British Columbia.
Prof. Balmforth’s research has focused on the modeling and analysis of problems in classical fluid mechanics, complex geophysical flows, and viscoplastic flows. His work combines asymptotic analysis, dynamical systems theory, and stability theory together with a keen physical insight into modeling issues associated with complex fluids. Notable contributions include the modeling and analysis of Non-Newtonian lava flows, the study of solitary waves in thin film models, the analysis of the spectrum associated with shear-flows, vortices, and critical layers, and shallow water flows. His work is theoretical, yet is influenced strongly by laboratory experiments in fluids.

AMMCS-2013, Waterloo, Canada – Call for submissions
Dear Colleague:
AMMCS-2013 is an interdisciplinary international conference in a series of AMMCS meetings held in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada (http://www.ammcs2013.wlu.ca/). The series aims at promoting interdisciplinary research and collaboration involving mathematical and computational sciences. This year the conference will be held in the
last week of August (August 26 -– 30, 2013). It is organized in cooperation with AIMS and SIAM and is supported by the Fields Institute.
The abstract submission deadline for AMMCS-2013 is in April and it is quickly approaching. AMMCS-2013 participants are invited to submit their abstracts on-line at: http://www.ammcs2013.wlu.ca/submit-abstract.html

2013 Summer School on Optimization at U Calgary, June 14-28
Sponsored by Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), www.pims.math.ca, and one of the 2013 Thematic Activities of PIMS Collaborative Research Group “Optimization: Theory, Applications, and Algorithms”, the 2013 Summer School on Optimization will be taking place at University of Calgary from June 14 till June 28.
The school will consist of three individual lecture blocks, compressed into an equivalent of a one semester graduate level course. Block lectures will be led by the corresponding mentors — distinguished optimizers external to U of Calgary — with each block followed by a mid-term type evaluation. We are happy to announce that Drs. Miguel Anjos (CRC, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal), Heinz Bauschke (CRC, UBCO), Antoine Deza (CRC, McMaster),Warren Hare (UBCO), Yves Lucet (UBCO), and Shawn Wang (UBCO) will be mentoring the summer school. Tentatively classes will run daily 9am-12 noon, followed by students group work and free time. For more detials of the course content please consult the attached PDF description.
It is the intent to offer the sumer school as a graduate course registered with U of Calgary (approval pending). Therefore, participants from Western Deans’ Agreement affiliated sites, wcdgs.ca, will be eligible for a graduate course credit via the agreement. Students from other universities wishing to obtain an equivalent credit will have to work with their graduate school or equivalent on individual basis.

Postdoctoral Fellowship – Infectious Disease Modelling – York University
Agent-Based Modelling Laboratory

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in infectious disease modelling at the Agent-Based Modelling Laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to play a major role in multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional projects involving evaluation of intervention strategies for influenza pandemic preparedness. The research will use agent-based models to address a range of critical public health policy questions about the risk of infection and differential disease outcomes in different population settings. Under the supervision of Dr. Seyed Moghadas, the successful applicant will work collaboratively in a highly interactive environment at the Centre for Disease Modelling in York University.
Applicants should have significant experience in the development of agent-based simulation models, manipulating large datasets with knowledge of statistical analysis, and have excellent english language communication skills (both written and verbal). Previous experience working in a transdisciplinary research environment, and writing scientific articles would be an asset.
Applicants must be within 4 years of having completed their PhD in a field that is relevant to the research project (e.g., epidemiology, mathematics, biology, computational social science, computer science). The initial appointment will be for one year beginning April 2013 or soon after (but no later than June 1, 2013). Extension of the appointment is subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance during the first year. The salary commensurate with the experience of the candidate in the range of $40,000 to $48,000 CDN.
Review of applications will begin on March 15, 2013, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae along with complete contact information, copies of 2 recent publications (if applicable), a one page summary of research experience, and arrange for two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to abmlab@yorku.ca. Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Health Economics and Disease Dynamics at the Agent-Based Modelling Laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to play a major role in multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional projects involving economic evaluation and cost-effectiveness of intervention strategies for influenza pandemic preparedness. The research will use quantitative and dynamic modeling, and advanced inference methods to address a range of critical public health policy questions about the cost-effectiveness of intervention strategies in a pandemic influenza scenario. Under the supervision of Dr. Seyed Moghadas, the successful applicant will work collaboratively in a highly interactive environment at the Centre for Disease Modelling in York University.
