Ibni Prize 2013
(English version follows the French one)
Cher ami, chere amie
Amities
Jean-Renault Marie-Francoise Roy
__________________________________________________________________________
Dear Friends,
The Prize “Ibni Oumar Mahamat Saleh” was created to keep alive the memory of our colleague and to continue his commitment to Mathematics in Africa. It is awarded every year to a young mathematician from Central Africa or West Africa by a scientific committee set up by ICPAM. The prize funds a scientific visit of several months in a research institute.
a) A new round of fund raising is now needed because the generous donations received during the last campaign in 2011, as well as the support of ICPAM for the travel, will not completely cover the budget for the 2013 Prize. The French Mathematical Society, which we warmly thank, has agreed to host a site devoted to the prize. Thank you for your donation which can be made on http://smf4.emath.fr/PrixIbni/formulaire/. A fiscal receipt will be sent to you.
b) The 2013 call for applications is on the website http://smf4.emath.fr/PrixIbni/candidatures.html The deadline is December 15, 2013. We kindly ask you to forward this information to potential candidates.
c) We were invited this year to present the Ibni Prize at a meeting of the Party for the Liberties and the Development (the party of which Ibni was the leader). The text of our presentation can be found on http://smf4.emath.fr/PetitionIbni/Documents/PrisedeparoleIbni23fevrier.p… this occasion, we accepted a highly symbolic donation to the Ibni Prize. Since then, we were very touched to receive from Chad the following information: “On the 20th of July, a forum on the Ibni Prize was organized in N’Djamena, directed towards young Chadian researchers. We presented to an audience of more than 160 persons information on the initiative of the French and International scientists who wanted to perpetuate the memory of our dear friend and comrade Ibni. We also recalled that the prize is totally apolitical. We were motivated by the fact that there has been only one Chadian applicant since the creation of the Prize.” The involvement and the courage of our Chadian friends are impressive.
d) The Prize was awarded in 2009 to Oumarou Abdou Arbi, from Niger, for a scientific visit at INRIA in Rennes, in 2010 to Amadou Tall, from Senegal, for a scientific visit at the University of Strasbourg, in 2011 to Solym Mawaki Manou Abi, from Togo, for a scientific visit at the University of Toulouse and in 2012 to El Hadji Deme, from Senegal, for a scientific visit at INRIA in Grenoble. We keep contact with the recipients, who are successfully pursuing their scientific career.
The truth about the fate of Ibni is still unknown! We want to know.
Best wishes,
Marie-Francoise Roy and Jean Renault

“Adaptivity in the Numerical Solution of PDEs” Short Course + Collaborative Workshop
First Call for Participation in:
“Adaptivity in the Numerical Solution of PDEs” Short Course + Collaborative Workshop, organized by the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) Collaborative Research Group in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, Aug. 17, 2014 – Aug. 22, 2014, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada
The use of computational methods to treat mathematical models in science and engineering is widespread. Such models often involve PDEs, and the efficiency and accuracy of these computations depends critically on the use of sophisticated numerical techniques which adapt the computation according to the behavior of the solution, often based on some form of error estimate.
The aim of this workshop is to provide an introduction to the state of the art in theory and practical applications of adaptivity in PDEs. The program will begin with a two-day short course, “Adaptive Methods for the Numerical Solution of PDEs”, given by Dr. Weizhang Huang (University of Kansas). The middle component of the program will focus on presentations by researchers whose work may benefit from the use of adaptive techniques for PDEs arising as mathematical models in practical applications. The final segment of the program will feature a workshop format in which breakout teams, consisting of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows led by experts on theoretical or computational aspects of adaptive methods for PDEs, will investigate the process of introducing adaptive techniques into the numerical
simulations that arise in the applications identified earlier. The segment will also include several talks by researchers working in adaptivity for PDEs.
The organizers invite participation by researchers in adaptivity for PDEs, researchers working in applied PDEs whose work may benefit from the use of adaptive methods for PDEs, and associated graduate students and post docs. The program will have room for 5 – 8 talks by researchers in application domains. For researchers in adaptive methods for PDEs, the primary form of participation will be through the collaborative workshop teams but there will also be room for a limited number of talks.
Registration will be required. Some funding for graduate students will be available. Further details will be available at http://www.math.mun.ca/anasc/
