The CAIMS 2015 Annual Meeting will be held June 7-12 in Waterloo, Ontario, joint with AMMCS.

2014 Cecil Graham Doctoral Dissertation Award Call for Nominations

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) would like to invite nominations for the 2014 Cecil Graham Doctoral Dissertation Award. This award is given to recognize and to publicize an outstanding PhD thesis in Applied Mathematics defended at a Canadian University during the calendar year prior to the year of the award.

The award consists of a prize of $1000 and a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the CAIMS*SCMAI Annual Meeting. The recipient will be invited to give a lecture at the Annual Meeting in the year of the award. A travel allowance will be provided.

Nominations must be submitted online at www.caims.ca//nominations by January 31, 2015, and shall consist of:

• an electronic copy of the thesis,
• a covering letter from the thesis supervisor indicating why the thesis is suitable as an entry in the Competition. This letter should include a description of the problem, techniques and results, potential impact, etc.,
• a separate letter (from the supervisor or other appropriate person familiar with the thesis and the area of application) identifying the possible applications of the work,
• a letter (from the Graduate Chair, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University library, etc.) providing proof of the official date the thesis was accepted.

2015 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award Call for Nominations

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society and the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences are pleased to announce the 2015 competition for the CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics. The prize is to be awarded to a researcher fewer than ten years past the date of Ph.D. as of January of the year of the award. The prize recognizes exceptional research in any branch of applied mathematics, interpreted broadly. The nominee should hold a tenure-track position at a Canadian university and the research on which the award is based should have been conducted primarily in Canada.

The award will consist of a cash prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the CAIMS Annual Meeting. The prize recipient will be invited to deliver a plenary lecture at the CAIMS Annual Meeting in the year of the award.

Nominations must be submitted by January 31, 2015 to nominations@pims.math.ca, and shall consist of:

• a curriculum vitae
• a publication list
• a cover letter explaining the basis of the nomination
• a maximum of three additional letters of support, at least two of which should be from references who are neither former PhD/postdoc mentors nor collaborators. In the case of very interdisciplinary research, the support letters should address the nominee’s contributions in both applied mathematics and the area of application.

Only electronic submissions will be accepted.

Unsuccessful nominations for candidates who continue to meet the eligibility criteria may be renominated with an updated CV and publication list, and if desired, new letters of support.

2015 CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize Call for Nominations

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) would like to invite nominations for the CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize. This award recognizes innovative and exceptional research contributions in applied or industrial mathematics.

The award will consist of a prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque that will be presented at the CAIMS*SCMAI Annual Meeting. The recipient will be invited to give a plenary lecture at the Annual Meeting in the year of the award. A travel allowance will be provided.

Nominations must be submitted online at www.caims.ca//nominations by January 31, 2015, and shall consist of:

• a title for the nomination designating research contributions in a specific area,
• a summary of the contributions in the form of a five-line press release,
• a detailed description (no longer than two pages) of the research contributions of the nominee in the specified area,
• a curriculum vitae including the list of publications,
• four reprints.

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) and the Fields Institute would like to invite nominations for the CAIMS-Fields Industrial Mathematics Prize. This prize is to be awarded to a researcher in recognition of exceptional research in any branch of industrial mathematics, interpreted broadly. 2015 Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award

The Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS) would like to invite nominations for the Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award. This award honours members of CAIMS/SCMAI for outstanding service to the society or to Applied Mathematics in Canada. The award is named after its first recipient, and was initiated as a means to honour Arthur for his years of unselfish service to the society. Arthur was a founding member of CAIMS/SCMAI and acted as its Secretary/Treasurer for eight years.

Nominations must be submitted online at www.caims.ca//nominations by January 31, 2015, and shall consist of:

• a letter outlining the candidate’s contributions to Canadian Applied Mathematics and signed by at least two CAIMS members,
• a curriculum vitae.

CAIMS*SCMAI 2015 Election: Call for Nominations

CAIMS*SCMAI will be holding an election next winter (March 2015) for:

• One Member-at-Large position on the Board of Directors
• Secretary
• President-Elect

The member-at-large position will fill the position to be vacated by Roderick Melnik, whose term will come to an end in 2015. The Secretary position will be vacated by Sharene Bungay. The President-Elect position will be vacated by Ray Spiteri, who will become President at the 2015 Annual Meeting. At that time, Ian Frigaard will become the Past-President, in the position vacated by Jianhong Wu. The Secretary and President-Elect appointments will be for two years, while the member-at-large position will be for a three-year term.

All members of CAIMS*SCMAI are invited to put forward names of candidates for these offices. Nominations should reach the CAIMS Secretary, Sharene Bungay <sharene@mun.ca> by January 31, 2015.

Tenure-track Instructor I positions

The Department of Mathematics at the University of British Columbia Vancouver invites applications for tenure-track Instructor I positions. A successful candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellent teaching of mathematics at the undergraduate level, and a PhD in mathematics (MSc considered in exceptional circumstances). Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Candidates with experience in computer and online tools for teaching mathematics, and in educational leadership are preferred and are particularly encouraged to apply.
