2014 CAIMS*SCMAI Research Prize
CAIMS*SCMAI is pleased to announce the winner of the 2014 CAIMS*SCMAI Research Award. This is the society’s preeminent research award and recognizes innovative and exceptional research contributions in applied or industrial mathematics. The 2014 awardee is Professor Michael Doebeli of the University of British Columbia for his contributions to the mathematical theory of the evolution of diversity and the evolution of cooperation.
Michael Doebeli is one of the foremost applied mathematicians working in evolutionary biology in the world. He is the main authority for the mathematical theory of the evolution of organismal diversity, and his research led to a paradigm shift in how scientists understand the origin of new species. Once viewed as theoretically impossible, biologists now accept Doebeli’s work showing that sympatric speciation, that is, the formation of new species in the absence of geographic separation, is
theoretically plausible, and that it occurs in natural and experimental systems. Doebeli has also made major contributions to the theory of cooperation, where his work has led to a unified understanding of the evolution of cooperation in natural systems ranging from microbes to complex human societies.

2014 CAIMS-MPrime Industrial Mathematics Prize
CAIMS*SCMAI and MPrime are pleased to announce that Prof. John Stockie of Simon Fraser University has been awarded the 2014 CAIMS-MPrime Industrial Mathematics Prize. This prize is awarded in recognition of exceptional research in any branch of industrial mathematics.
John Stockie’s industrial modelling work has had an important impact in the energy industry (Ballard Power Systems), agriculture (North American Maple Syrup Council), and pollution control (Teck-Cominco). In his letter of support, a representative at Teck Metals Ltd writes “Dr. Stockie has provided excellent value to Teck, with innovative solutions to extremely complex problems.” Academic letters of support were also enthusiastic, “one could consider Dr Stockie an ambassador for the discipline, whose work is ideally suited to raise public awareness for the usefulness of mathematical and computational sciences in real world applications,” and “He has also been a dedicated and effective advocate of the importance of mathematics to industry, while also successfully training a new generation of industrial mathematicians.” Dr Stockie has obtained significant research results in computational fluid dynamics, free boundary value problems and multiphase reactant flows in porous media, that have been published in journals of the highest standards including SIAM Review, SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics, and Journal of Computational Physics. Aside from his scientific activity, Dr. Stockie has played an important leadership role in industrial mathematics in Canada as one of the key individuals who made the MITACS NCE (now MPrime) an incredible success over a twelve year period.
