2014 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award

CAIMS and PIMS are pleased to announce that Prof. Geoff Wild of the University of Western Ontario has been awarded the 2014 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics. Prof. Wild obtained his PhD in 2004 from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Queen’s University. Since 2004 he has held post-doctoral positions at both Queen’s University and the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Wild joined the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Western Ontario in 2008 as an Assistant Professor. He will receive his award and delivery a plenary lecture at the 2014 Annual CAIMS*SCMAI meeting in Saskatoon in June, 2014.

Prof. Wild was cited “for his creative use of mathematical modelling to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology”.

Prof. Wild harnesses approaches from dynamical systems and stochastic processes to investigate the adaptive significance of animal behaviour. He has tackled a variety of topics, including parental investment in offspring, animal movement, altruism, and pathogen virulence. His most recent work focuses on the evolutionary transition of populations of solitary individuals into those with more complex, social organization.

2014 Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award

CAIMS*SCMAI is happy to announce that the recipient of the 2014 Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award is Professor Arvind Gupta of UBC.

Under Arvind’s leadership MITACS brought about a change in the way in which much of applied mathematics was carried out in Canada and an equally important change in the perception of the mathematical sciences by Canadian industry and public sector. The injection of new funding into the mathematical sciences enabled networks of researchers to collaboratively tackle important industrial projects while at the same time developing research infrastructure. The range of scientific areas addressed by mathematical methodologies also expanded into non-traditional areas of “industrial mathematics”. The seamless inclusion of statistical, computing and engineering scientists within the MITACS networks broke down barriers and brought these disciplines closer to each other as well as to the research sponsors. MITACS was a ready supporter of inter-institute and inter-society initiatives, sponsoring study groups and conferences. In particular, MITACS leadership in the ICIAM 2011 organisation in Vancouver was a key factor in its success. While MITACS success was also built on the hard work of many CAIMS*SCMAI members (and non-members), working both scientifically and administratively across Canada, Prof. Gupta’s inclusive and constructive attitude, coupled with his energetic and visionary leadership were a key ingredient and his service to the Canadian Applied Mathematics community at large is exemplary.

“Recent Developments in Adaptive Methods for PDEs”, AARMS-CRM Collaborative Workshop and Short Course, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL, Canada, Aug 17-22, 2014.

Registration now open!!

Second Call for Participation in: “Recent Developments in Adaptive Methods for PDEs” AARMS-CRM Short Course + Collaborative Workshop, organized by the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS) Collaborative Research Group in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, Aug. 17-22, 2014, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada

St. John’s is the most easterly point and the oldest city in North America. Connected to Canada and the US with direct flights from Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and Newark and a short (4-5 hr) direct flight from Heathrow!

The aim of this workshop is to provide an introduction to the state of the art in theory and practical applications of adaptivity in PDEs. The program will begin with a two-day short course, “Adaptive Methods for the Numerical Solution of PDEs”, given by Dr. Weizhang Huang (University of Kansas). The middle component of the program will focus on presentations by researchers whose work may benefit from the use of adaptive techniques for PDEs arising as mathematical models in practical applications. The final segment of the program will feature a workshop format in which breakout teams, consisting of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows led by experts on theoretical or computational aspects of adaptive methods for PDEs, will investigate the process of introducing adaptive techniques into the numerical simulations that arise in the applications identified earlier. The segment will also include several talks by researchers working in adaptivity for PDEs.

There are 3 ways to participate:

  • attend the short course and workshop!
  • present an academic or industrial applied problem which may benefit from the use of adaptive PDE techniques
  • present recent research results on adaptive methods for PDEs and work on the collaborative workshop teams

Registration is required. Partial travel support is available. Further details and registration information are available at http://www.math.mun.ca/anasc/workshop.html
