CAIMS 2015 Annual Meeting
(Deadline for Early Bird Registration: March 31, 2015)
You are invited to participate in the 2015 AMMCS-CAIMS Congress, Waterloo, Canada (June 7-12, 2015).
Plenary speakers at the Congress include R. Albert (Penn State), T. Bielecki (Illinois Institute of Technology), C. Budd (University of Bath), Wing Kam Liu (Northwestern University), S. Mallat (Ecole Normale Superieure), K. Oosterlee (Delft University of Technology and CWI), S. Schreiber (University of California, Davis), E. Vanden-Eijnden (Courant Institute, New York University), Y. Yi (University of Alberta), N. Zabaras (University of Warwick). Refereed proceedings will be published by Springer and selected papers, presented at the conference, will be invited to several journal issues.
The Congress is an international event combining the AMMCS and CAIMS meetings at the same location. It focuses on recent advances in Applied Mathematics, Modeling and Computational Science (AMMCS) and includes major CAIMS Scientific Themes. The 2015 AMMCS-CAIMS Congress is organized in cooperation with AIMS and SIAM and will take place in Waterloo, ON, Canada, June 7-12, 2015.
Further details are at the conference website: http://www.ammcs-caims2015.wlu.ca (contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org).

2015 CAIMS-Fields Industrial Mathematics Prize
CAIMS*SCMAI and The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences are pleased to announce that Prof. Sean Bohun of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology is the winner of the 2015 CAIMS-Fields Prize in Industrial Mathematics. Prof. Bohun obtained his PhD in 1998 from the University of Victoria and has been a faculty member at UOIT since 2006. He will receive the award and deliver a plenary lecture at the 2015 Annual CAIMS*SCMAI meeting in Waterloo in June, 2015.
Prof. Bohun was cited for “invaluable contributions to the Canadian industrial mathematics community beyond any normal measures”, in particular as an organizer and participant of “nearly every Industrial Modelling Workshop held in Canada, since their inception in 1998” and for his role as founding editor of ICIAM’s newsletter Dionia.
A classically trained applied mathematician, Prof. Bohun “has come up with exciting and valuable insights into problems ranging from mineral processing to tissue engineering and scheduling. This has led to new theoretical developments in the theory of PDE models for thermoelasticity and free boundary problems.”
Postdoctoral position, Memorial University of Newfoundland
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position in the Memorial University of Newfoundland Centre for Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing, within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Scott MacLachlan, with a research focus on novel preconditioning strategies for multiphysics problems. Duties will include design and analysis of multigrid and/or domain-decomposition algorithms, as well as their implementation in a high-performance computing environment. A desired, but flexible, start date of September 1, 2015 is expected.
The initial position will be for one year, with possibility of renewal subject to funding and performance. Opportunities for teaching may be available, if desired by the successful candidate. The minimum annual salary is $40K, but will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A PhD and relevant expertise in applied mathematics or scientific computing is expected, with a preference for experience in computational PDEs and/or numerical linear algebra. Previous interdisciplinary project experience, particularly in areas of the geosciences, is a plus. Interested applicants should send a cover letter, detailed CV, and names and email addresses of three references directly to Dr. MacLachlan (email@example.com). Review of applications will begin on April 15, 2015, and continue until the position is filled.
Memorial University is one of the two largest universities in Atlantic Canada. As the province’s only university, Memorial plays an integral role in the educational and cultural life of Newfoundland and Labrador. Offering diverse undergraduate and graduate programs to almost 18,000 students, Memorial provides a distinctive and stimulating environment for learning in St. John’s, a very safe, friendly city with great historic charm, a vibrant cultural life, and easy access to a wide range of outdoor activities.
Memorial University is committed to employment equity and encourages applications from qualified women and men, visible minorities, aboriginal people and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. Partners of candidates for positions are invited to include their resume for possible matching with other job opportunities.
