CAIMS Election 2016
CAIMS*SCMAI will be holding an election in April 2016 for three Member-at-Large positions on the Board of Directors. This year, we are excited to announce that we will be using an online voting system. Only current 2016 members, including life time members, are eligible to vote. No paper ballot will be mailed and instead, an email message will be sent out that will provide information on the e-voting website and login credentials.
Watch out for the online voting email by the end of March. As this is the first time we adopt e-voting for election, we hope it will be a pleasant experience for everyone and welcome any feedback from the members.

CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics: Jean-Philippe Lessard
CAIMS*SCMAI and PIMS are pleased to announce that Professor Jean-Philippe Lessard of Université Laval is the winner of the 2016 CAIMS/PIMS Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics. Professor Lessard obtained his PhD in 2007 from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He held postdoctoral positions at the Free University of Amsterdam, Rutgers and Princeton, and is now associate professor at Université Laval. He is also a member of the Groupe Interdisciplinaire de Recherche en Éléments Finis (GIREF), which brings together researchers and research groups from a number of universities to promote research, development, specialist training and interaction with industry, in the field of modeling and numerical simulation.
Professor Lessard’s research interests are in dynamical systems. In particular, he uses and develops rigorous computational methods, topological methods and analytic estimates for the study of solutions of partial differential equations, delay differential equations and ordinary differential equations. Professor Lessard has made substantial contributions to the theory of rigorous computing, and was cited for being ¿one of the world leading experts in [rigorous computing]¿ and “at the forefront of applied mathematics in Canada, blending traditional analysis with traditional computation to build something entirely new.”
Professor Lessard will receive his award and deliver a plenary lecture at the 2016 Annual CAIMS*SCMAI meeting at the University of Alberta in June, 2016.

Workshop on Nonlinear Optimization Algorithms and Industrial Applications
A Workshop on Nonlinear Optimization Algorithms and Industrial Applications will take place at the Fields Institute, Toronto, on June 2-4, 2016. Everyone is welcome to attend the workshop, which will celebrate the 70th birthday of Andrew R. Conn. Thursday June 2 will be designated as Industry Day, with all talks focused on topics relevant to industry, so participants from industry and students interested in industrial careers are especially encouraged to attend on Thursday, and, if they wish, present a poster in the poster session. A limited number of travel grants are available for graduate students and early career researchers who present a poster. The deadline for applying for a travel grant is March 31.
