Message from the Long Range Plan Steering Committee
/(La version française suit)/<#fr>
The Long Range Plan Steering Committee has completed its consultation
draft of the Long Range Plan for Mathematics and Statistics, and is
releasing it today to the mathematical and statistical sciences
communities for their feedback. You will find it on the front page of
the website longrangeplan.ca.
We don’t intend this version to be circulated beyond our communities; it
is still rough in places and the layout is very approximate.
There will be presentations on the LRP at the CMS meeting in Regina
(June 2, 12.30pm), the SSC meeting in Guelph (June 3, 4pm) and the CAIMS
meeting in Toronto (June 24, 1pm (Board) and June 27, 12 pm (AGM)).
Comments on any aspect of the plan are welcome, in the form most
convenient to you. You may post comments on our web site, send email to
any member of the steering committee (http://longrangeplan.ca/?page_id=17)
or send comments by mail or email to Nancy Reid (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The consultation period will run to *July 31, 2012*; after this date we will
proceed to prepare and translate into French the final version.
In writing the plan we aimed to include material addressed at three
different audiences: mathematical and statistical science researchers,
NSERC, and non-specialists, and it may help to keep this in mind as you
read it. In the final version we will also include some pictures and
graphics, and will be very happy if you send us your favourites.
Looking forward to your feedback,
On behalf of the LRP Steering Committee,
May 14, 2012

2012 CAIMS-Mprime Industrial Mathematics Prize
CAIMS is pleased to announce that the 2012 CAIMS-Mprime Industrial
Research Award has been awarded to Prof. André Fortin, Université Laval.
Prof. Fortin has been given this award for distinguished contributions to
applied mathematics, mainly in finite elements methods, fluid
dynamics and high performance scientific computing, with a strong
component of technological transfer to industry. The committee was
impressed with the variety of his industrial applications to polymers,
wood products and pneumatic industry.
André Fortin is an excellent example for the new generations of Canadian
applied mathematicians and scientists.
The award consists of a cash prize of $1,000 and a commemorative plaque
that will be presented at the CAIMS Annual Meeting in Toronto in June
2012. Prof. Fortin will also deliver a plenary lecture at the Annual

2012 Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award
The 2012 Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award is presented to
Samuel S.P. Shen in recognition of his dedication, enthusiasm,
involvement and vision as President of the Society from 2001-2003.
During his tenure as President, Sam helped to shape and develop CAIMS
in many ways, including
– Establishing the CAIMS Research Prize
– Creating and enhancing partnerships between CAIMS with other Applied
Mathematics organizations including MITACS, ICIAM and SIAM
– Increasing CAIMS revenue through grants, industrial sponsorships,
advertisement in the newsletter and private donations (including
one from Sam himself)
– Increasing CAIMS membership, through promotion of CAIMS and the
establishment (with the treasurer, Mike Foreman) of the credit
card payment system for membership
